The Sumac Centre is run by volunteers, and so relies on the work of its users and members to keep itself going. There are no bosses and no-one gets paid for the work they do. Anyone is welcome to come and get involved.
The day-to-day business of running the Sumac is discussed and decided at open general meetings on the second Saturday of each month from 6pm – 8pm, including the People’s Kitchen meal at 7pm. Anyone is welcome to these meetings.
There are separate collectives that help run other areas of the Sumac, including the cafe, Forest Field’s Social Club, the garden, library etc. Again, these are all volunteer-led and run collectively.
The Sumac uses a consensus based decision making model, which aims to get the full consent of everyone involved before a proposal is accepted or decision made.
