VEGGIES share your concern for our brothers and sisters in South Africa.
“VEGGIES” works to inform the public about their health, their relationship with animals and the environment, and the part that diet plays in the distribution of food worldwide.
Those involved in the key issues of Vegetarianism, such as freedom from AT
hunger for all nations, and freedom from suffering for animals, cannot ignore the
injustice of apartheid. We reject all oppression based on race, creed, sex, political beliefs . . . . . or species.
We call on all individuals, businesses and campaign groups to make positive policies to combat such oppression. Here are some examples of the policies
of Veggies of Nottingham.
Democracy at work. Veggies is a workers co-operative, although some workers take no wages, raising funds instead for campaigns of their own choice. All member/workers join in the decision making of the company.
Banking. From the beginning we naturally left Barclays from our choice of bankers. We later came to realise that many major banks and institutions have involvement in South Africa. We therefore closed our account with National Westminster, in favour of the TSB, as they and the Anti-apartheid Movement state that they do not lend to South Africa. However the Ethical Investment Research and Information Service EIRIS investigated unit trusts, and found the TSB General Trust at the top of their table with 61.36% of their £285.31 million in companies with South African interests. We would welcome any advice on our next move. The Co-op bank might seem an obvious choice, but they have huge investments in intensive factory farming. We are now considering The Ecology Building Society or National Girobank.
Our next saga concerns Tomato Ketchup. We chose Heinz, as having no additives or preservatives, but were worried about the sugar content, particularly when we found it to be refined using animal bonemeal. Although Heinz assure us that the process is soon to change, the sugar used is produced by Tate & Iyle – a major South African investor. We have finally come up with our own blend, based on Whole Earth ketchup, made in England from natural ingredients.
Fruit Juices. Ours are packed and marketed by Volante who have given written
assurances that no South African fruit is ever used.
Tea and Coffee sold by Veggies comes from Traidcraft, who campaign for changes in international trade. With trust funds and investment, they make every effort to
put earning to the good of tea and coffee workers.
Wherever possible we promote the use of recycled goods, and investigate everything that we use to avoid animal products, those tested on animals and products of apartheid. We welcome your comments and advice.
