Gentle Angry Women – Film with Q&A at Sumac Sisterhood

Three young activists trace the legacy of Greenham Common Women’s Peace protest forty years on and discover the alarming reality of British nuclear armament.

This coming-of-age documentary, driven by intergenerational dialogue, speaks to the need for hope, action and change.

We invite members of local feminist, environmental and peace activist groups and members of our own monthly Sisterhood Group to join us to watch and discuss this new film with Barbara Santi Documentary filmmaker . All are welcome to this gender neutral event. The Forest Fields Social Club (Sumac Bar) will be open and snacks will be available., including #SamosasForSocialChange!

Unaware of the longest female-led protest in British history, a new generation of young female activists is standing up to fight for the issues of their time, as well as being teenagers and finding their place in a turbulent world.

We meet Poppy (16), Xanthe (17), and Evie (19) as they discover the largely overlooked Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, where thousands of women lived for 19 years protesting against nuclear missiles.

Retracing the original 110-mile march, the young women embark on an intimate intergenerational exchange, revealing a journey of self-discovery and a timely narrative of feminist activism confronting the alarming reality of British nuclear armament.

Gentle, Angry Women is a poignant and timely documentary that weaves personal discovery, historical remembrance, and contemporary activism together. It responds to the rising global tensions of our time while celebrating the enduring power of women’s collective action – revealing a bridge between past courage and present hope.

During Forest Fields Social Club events under 18s must be accompanied by an adult who remains responsible for them whilst on Sumac premises

All Hands on Deck, Climate Activism the Way Ahead

A book launch presenting “All Hands on Deck, Climate Activism the Way Ahead” by Jan Goodey.
For more than 30 years, I’ve been on the front lines of direct-action environmentalism and anti-capitalism in the UK. I’ve helped shut down offensive companies for the day and been part of successful protest camps to save Britain’s ancient woodlands. But it’s not enough. Climate breakdown continues unabated; the gap between haves and have-nots is growing.

We welcome legendary activist Jan Goodey to the shop to help celebrate the launch of his essential new book All Hands On Deck: Climate Activism and the way ahead, out now from PM Press. A member of Just Stop Oil, and among those imprisoned for his climate actions, Jan is a seasoned and courageous activist. For more than 30 years, he has been on the front lines of direct-action environmentalism and anti-capitalism in the UK. Jan has helped shut down offensive companies and been part of successful protest camps to save Britain’s ancient woodlands. But, as he argues in his new pamphlet, it’s not enough. Climate breakdown continues unabated; the gap between haves and have-nots is growing.

This is a free event, but advance booking here on Eventbrite helps prepare the evening and ensure sufficient #SamosasForSocialChange!

“All Hands on Deck, Climate Activism the Way Ahead” is published by PM Press . It is from Veggies online shop, at Sumac Centre and from  Active  Distribution.
