SUMMARY:Spycops - Undercover Policing Inquiry 2026 - Tranche3 Phase3
DESCRIPTION:Click here for shortcut to Links for live & recap coverage. \nThe Undercover Policing Inquiry continues right through July with another block of public hearings: Tranche 3 Phase 3\, Being questioned now are 24 of the managers of the Special Demonstration Squad from 90s-00s. \nOn Friday 24th July\, there will be something different. Instead of a cop\, we will hear from the core participant and Police Spies Out of Lives activist\, Helen Steel. \nSee the preview here and the schedule for this section. You can follow too\, via the links further below. \nMeanwhile Home Office ‘consultation’ is an attempt to shut down the #spycops Inquiry\, just before it reaches ‘our’ time. \nDisclosure and closure relating to the NPOIU\, set up in 1999 to track green activists and public demos\, may be denied to those affected. \nMore https://social.coop/@Veggies/116931849540821894 \n \nWhat we’ve heard so far\nOn 19th and 24th June\, there was something different. Instead of a cop\, we heard from the activist Helen Steel\, with whom we worked during the McLibel campaign. Helen may appear again on Friday 24th July. \nOn Thursday 26th March we heard from the last of the #spycops in the SDS (Special Demonstration Squad) – a particularly odous peace of work. Big up and big love to all the (civilian) witness\, commentators\, researchers & campaigners. See the post here. \nWatch this reaction video from spycops campaigners (audio begins at 2min 30sec) \nAnalysis of end of the questioning of spycop Robert hastings \nSumac connections\nDuring the hearings in March we began to heard mentions of ‘Rod Richardson’\, the first we know to be deployed to the Sumac Centre in Nottingham\, and his follow-up Mark ‘Stone’/Kennedy. \nEvents reported on that we supported included DSEi Arms Fair 2001 & 2003\, MayDay protests\, Earth First (EF!) Gatherings in N.Wales & N.Yorkshire\, GM Crop decontaminations & more\, including the 2005 G8 campaign at Gleneagles in Scotland & Dissent network at Stirling\, where we built on the EF! camp skills later deployed at Climate Camps (& later XR). More via social.coop/@Veggies \nFor more details of the March 2026 hearings listen to ‘Alison’ on Woman’s Hour and see this summary from The Canary. \n\nSince  1968 police targeted a wide range of social justice and human rights campaigns. Rights were violated and lives destroyed. In 2003 these secret political police infiltrated a group of idealistic young environmental activists in Nottingham\, forming sexual relationships and spying without warrant on hundreds of innocent civilians. \nThis scandal\, dubbed ‘#Spycops’‘\, is now the subject of one of the UK’s longest\, deepest\, most extensive and expensive ‘public’ inquiries. \n \nFollow daily (Mon-Thurs) from 10am\nThe hearings schedule is here\, featuring the Managers for the discredited Special Demonstration Squad secret political policing unit. \nLike us you can follow these platforms: \n\nLive analysis\, 5 times daily\, hosted by Tom B Fowler live on facebook and on  ‘Live’ playlist on YouTube.\nReal time coverage by Tom Fowler  and others on #Spycops threads on XTwitter.\nFor official live stream from Undercover Policing Inquiry  go directly to the current hearing (or next) live stream.\nSpycops.Info for the Spycops Info Podcast and updates from the key groups:\n\nPolice Spies Out of Lives (PSOOL)\nThe Campaign Opposing Police Surveillance (COPS)\nUndercover Research Group and their Spycops Research database.\n\n\n\nSubject to availability we will sometimes follow live at Sumac Screen Room. For times of our coverage\, check our commentary on Social.coop/(Mastodon). Also Veggies on Bluesky\, here and ‘bridged’ here. \n\nMany more links\, events and news in the Spycops.Info Newsletter.\n\nEvidence hearings\nIn phase 1 we heard 26 witnesses give oral evidence\, including 3 Special Demonstration Squad (SDS) officers deployed during the period between approximately 1993 to 2007 and 2 former SDS managers. The Inquiry also heard from 21 non-state witnesses who represent groups that were infiltrated and women who were deceived. \nDuring the course of these hearings\, the Inquiry will hear evidence on topics related to undercover policing including: \n\nThe conduct of undercover officers\, including the deception of women into relationships\nThe use of deceased children’s identities by undercover officers\nDecisions related to targeting and deployments into groups\, including but not limited to Family Justice Campaigns\, including the Stephen Lawrence Campaign\nThe training and supervision provided by managers\, and the extent to which they were aware of the conduct of the officers.\n\nOn Tues 16th December 2025 (day-30) we were joined for live analysis here at Sumac Centre by Kate Wilson. to follow the evidence of Mark Jenner aka ‘Mark Cassidy’\, who infiltrated anti fascist groups & Colin Roach Centre between 1995 and 2000. \n  \n \n  \n\nIn claiming that the Home Office put new codes and safeguards in place in 2000 to shift responsibility for the abuses that happened before\, are they admitting that they _were_ resposible for the breaches of those ‘standards’ by those that followed\, eg Kennedy et al https://t.co/isdzwZVJni \n— Veggies Vegan Campaign Catering (@veggiesnottm) October 13\, 2025 \n \n\nSee Also. . .\n \nSee also DISCLOSURE: Unravelling the Spycops. \nKate Wilson’s memoir is a shocking exposé about the workings of Britain’s secret police. Much of the activity documented by Kate took place at Nottingham’s Sumac Centre. We were delighted that Kate joined us here on Sunday 1st June 2025\, to tell her story and launch her book (which is available from Veggies online shop). \n \nThe new 3-part ITV documentary series ‘The Undercover Police Scandal: Love and Lies Exposed’ premiered on Thursday 6 March at 9pm\, with screenings at Sumac Screen Room. \n\n\n\nFrom the moment ‘Lisa’ discovers Mark Kennedy’s passport\, the #spycops scandal starts to unravel.\n\nSee the clip of this moment here.\n\nCatch up with the whole series …here…\n\n\n\n \nSee also spycops-undercover-policing-inquiry-2026 on the Animal Rights Calendar.

SUMMARY:Community Food Hub
DESCRIPTION:We redistribute fresh foods from Foodprint and Sanatan Food Bank\, saving their surplus veg from going straight to landfill. \n\nPop in during the regular Sumac Sunday Brunch or Wednesday pop-up cafe & warm hub\, or at other times on our events diary.\n\n\n\nSUMAC FOOD REDISTRIBUTION\nFREE – PLEASE TAKE WHAT YOU CAN USE OR SHARE\n\nFood is a right\, not a privilege.\n\n\nFood poverty\, the inability to afford\, or to have access to\, food to make up a healthy diet\, affects 8-9% of the UK population. [Ref: Sustain]\n\n\nFood loss and waste accounts for 8-10% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions. [Ref: United Nations UNFCCC]\n\n\nThe Sumac Community can play a valuable role in tackling food waste.\n\nSurplus foods are shared with Sumac by Sanatan Food Bank and FoodPrint. As well as being good for the Sumac Community\, we provide a valued service to them by helping reduce their waste\, which would otherwise go to landfill or incineration. \nThis\, together with an option of sharing our surplus with Sherwood Exchange and local animal rescues\, gives SIX opportunities for these foods to be consumed! \nIt is the obsession with perfection by the food industry and supermarkets that is driving the food waste crisis.\nThe planet benefits by surpluses being diverted from landfill\, even if it ultimately ends up making compost for the Sumac Garden. \nfood.gov.uk recommends a visual check or the ‘smell test’ to assess the quality of fruit and veg\, or packaged foods with a ‘best before‘ date. Packaged foods should not be given or taken if past its ‘use-by‘ date. Our volunteers make every effort to check that everything is edible\, vegan and not subject to an ethical boycott. Please draw any inappropriate goods to our attention. \nWe need more help. \nIf you value this initiative\, please ask how you can support our work. \n\nFor more information see the Community Food Hub post by Veggies.\n\nYou could also read or share the latest version of the Sumac Food Redistribution flier.\n

SUMMARY:Sumac Library and Bookstall + Rainbow Archive
DESCRIPTION:The Sumac Centre has its own small library\, which people are free to browse when the Centre is open. \nThe library covers a range of topics from anarchism\, animal rights\, political and social theory\, race\, gender and class\, environment and ecology\, activism\, to journalism and history and more. \nWe also welcome offers of help in helping to keep the Library (& book stall) organised. \nSumac also hosts the Veggies Book Stall\, available whenever the Centre is open. Their are books and journals for reference and for sale covering green\, human rights\, animal issues\, anti-war\, co-operation and social justice. Some are available via Veggies online store. \nWe have started a catalogue of books in the library and another of journals and other archives. \nWe are working with the Sparrows Nest Library. As at June 2026 they had processed over 1500 items! \nFor the Public Catalogue search for “Rainbow Centre” and Rainbow archives detailed listing. \nSee also “Rainbow Centre” at the Internet Archive  \n  \nSupport this project\nWe need to raise £400 for the next part of our archiving work.
